If you read one thing
This page is the whole story. It takes about 3 minutes. If you never read another page here, you will still know what is going on.
The short version:
- Your private data is locked by a kind of math.
- A future computer will be able to undo that math.
- Nobody has built one yet.
- People can copy your locked data now and open it later.
- It only matters for things that still matter in 10 years.
- Your phone and your browser are already being fixed.
What is going on?
When you bank online or send a private message, your device locks the data first. Anyone who grabs it in the middle sees only noise.
That lock is a math problem. It is easy to do one way. It is far too slow to undo. That slowness is the whole reason your data stays private.
A quantum computer is a new kind of machine. It can undo that math. The way to do it was worked out in 1994. What is missing is a machine big enough to run it.
Nobody has built one. That is not a promise that nobody will.
Why does that matter now?
Because someone can copy your locked data today and just keep it.
They cannot read it. They do not need to. They put it in storage and wait. Storage is cheap. If a machine that can open it ever shows up, everything they saved opens at once.
So the risk is not really about the future. What you send today is what gets opened later.
You will never be told this happened. Copying data breaks nothing and sets off no alarm. Every breach law we have is built around someone breaking in, and nobody breaks in here.
Does this affect me?
For most of what you do, no. That is the honest answer.
Ask one question about anything: in 10 years, would this still be private?
Your lunch plans, no. Last week’s group chat, no. Most of your day, no. None of that is worth anything to somebody who opens it in 2036.
But some things stay private for life:
- Your DNA, and your family’s, because a test on you says a lot about them
- Your fingerprints and your face
- Your health history, therapy, and the drugs you take
- Your Social Security number
- Papers on a house you will pay off over 30 years
You can change a password in a minute. You cannot change any of these.
What do I do?
The short answer is: not much, and that is real good news. Most of this gets fixed above your head, by the companies that run the apps and sites you use. A lot of it is already done.
Here is your whole list:
- Keep your phone, computer, and apps updated. This is the big one. The fix ships inside normal updates, and you get it without asking.
- For things that must stay private for years, use an app that is already fixed. Signal did this in 2023. Apple did it in 2024.
- Delete what you are done with. Data you got rid of cannot be copied later.
- Think twice before another DNA test. You cannot take it back, and it signs up your relatives too.
- Ask your doctor, bank, and insurer what their plan is. They hold the things that matter most.
- Buy nothing. No product sold to regular people fixes this. Anything sold that way is selling you a problem it does not solve.
That is it. That is the list.
What should I not worry about?
- Your password. Good sites never store the real thing, and the way they store it holds up fine.
- Your bank account. Reading old data tells someone about you. It does not hand them your money.
- A date on the calendar. Nobody knows when this happens. Anyone selling you a countdown is selling you something.
- Everything breaking at once. One half of this math breaks. The other half is fine with a bigger key.
Questions people ask
Is my data already stolen? Nobody can tell you yes or no. Copying leaves no trace. What is known is that it costs almost nothing to do.
When does this happen? Nobody credible names a year. Experts who study it put the odds at about 1 in 3 within 10 years.
Should I stop using the internet? No. The people running it are already fixing this, and most of what you do does not matter here anyway.
Is this being oversold? Parts of it, by people with something to sell. The core of it is real enough that governments have set dates to fix their own systems.
Why has nobody told me? There is nothing to tell. No break-in happened. That is the strange part, and it is why this stays quiet.
